Vdovjak

Matus Vdovjak makes wine in the Tokaj region of Slovakia - based in the small village of Velka Trna, close to the borders with Ukraine and Hungary.

His winemaking career started in the cellars of a conventional wine producer where he realised that the only way to express terroir to its full potential is a low-intervention approach - both in the vineyards and the cellar.

Matus works with the signature Tokaj grape varieties: Furmint, Lipovina (Hárslevelű) and Yellow Muscat, however patches of Muscat Ottonel and Welsh Riesling can be found in his vineyards too.

Matus is spearheading natural wine production in the region and along with two of his winemaking friends, started a group promoting this winemaking approach called Tokaj Underground.

Under this project they keep the classical, rustic way of wine production alive, although they are not afraid of experimenting and pushing the boundaries including through the use of Georgian amphoras.

His annual production is around 10,000 bottles.
